The “3rd Biennial International Transdisciplinary Seminar on the Complexity Approach" is sponsored by La Cátedra de la Filial del Instituto Superior de Arte de Camagüey [Cuba] and the El Centro de Medicina y Complejidad de la Universidad Médica “Carlos J. Finlay” [Camagüey, Cuba].  The conference, and pre-conference workshops, are expected to attract 250 participants from Latin America, Europe and the U.S. and run from 21 Feb. until 26 Feb.  [The program is at http://tallerencamaguey.pbwiki.com/1rst+Announcement]

Conference objectives:

   1. Promote the exchange of ideas and experiences about transdisciplinarity, complexity and the relationships among them.

   2. Show examples of solutions of complex problems in the real world.

   3. Develop theoretical and hands-on special sessions on using Complexity Theory and simulation and modeling tools (Netlogo) to understand real-world problems such as sustainable agriculture, disaster evacuation and management, and public health services delivery.

Our unique activities at this conference, followed by additional meetings in Havana, are to demonstrate "Applied Complexity models" related to these topics and to learn from our Latin American colleagues how they are using Complexity Theories and Applied Complexity to address issues common to all societies.  The special value of the Cuban experience is that nation's unique social and economic circumstances which has allowed the Cuban people to learn how to do the most with limited resources.  There is no other regular conference that brings together researchers in the Western Hemisphere working in "Complexity Theory" and those of us working in the emerging discipline of "Applied Complexity."

The only way to return to the U.S. is via Havana, Cuba.  We have been invited to present our papers at Havana's Cátedra de Complejidad [Center for the Study of Complexity].  We anticipate the meetings in Havana Feb. 27 to March 2, depending on transportation realities.
